EAST KETTERING STRATEGIC URBAN EXTENSION (SUE) PHASE 1 ACCESS ROADS

Breedon were appointed Principal Contractor by Hanwood Park LLP to Design and Construct the Phase 1 Access Roads SUE. The project was located on the Eastern edge of Kettering Town, Northamptonshire, and was the initial stage in unlocking over 328 hectares of agricultural land for a proposed mix use development. The finished development will include: 

  • Up to 5,500 dwellings  
  • A secondary school  
  • Up to 4 primary schools  
  • Open space (covering park(s) and play areas)  
  • Local centre facilities (e.g. shops and health care) 

The site was bound to the south by the A14 trunk road and a number of existing dwellings. A significant element of the works involved realigning the approach to Junction 10 on the A14, with a speed limit of 70mph and AADT of 68,000. Breedon’s Project Team managed the design and construction of the project with Temporary Works Co-Ordinators and Traffic Safety Officers working within the team to provide the safe and successful delivery achieved.  

Key requirements of the contract included: 

  • Extensive site clearance and demolition across 18.15 hectares  
  • Large scale earthworks operations including 90,000m3 of bulk excavations.  
  • Construction of 2.4km of new single carriageway to Northampton County Council Section 38 adoptable standard 
  • Construction of a new 45m diameter Section 278 roundabout  
  • Construction of a new Section 278 signalised access junction on the Barton Road.  
  • Reconfiguration of the Section 278 Cranford Road junction.  
  • Associated section 185, 104 and 98 drainage provisions.  
  • Installation of over 2km of trunk foul network to depths of 9.5m. 
  • Installation of 850m of surface water network to depths of 8.5m. 
  • The provision of 2.2km of utilities corridor for new site service installations. 
  • Ecology mitigation measures, including newt fencing, construction of new newt habitats, and relocation of badger setts.
